In Ano Asites there is a traditional way to make baskets, that is unique to the village. Here is a TV interview about it. It is in Greek, but the footage of the village is worth watching.

Ilona was the first artist to spend a week in the new Ano Asites artists residency. She loved her time in the village so much that she wanted to leave a mural as a present.
ilonasturm.com/ Eleni came from Australia but her parents were born in Greece. She came to Crete to record locals making their own recipes, in their own kitchens. The cultural association of Ano Asites, organised Eleni to spend time with another Eleni, who's last name is Malliaraki. They made a few village recipes in the Eleni's kitchen.
One of the interesting legends in the village is one of fairies that live in the landscape. In the 1940s a local lady made a tapestry of the love story. We tracked down the handmade piece and an anthropologist recorded the full story. More on that later.
Silsil Ism from Japan teamed up with local Odysseas Grammatikakis to put on a wonderful live painting event. After their performance was a traditional ceremony of jumping over fire. Followed by a play called, 'The Backgammon'.
